EVER since the classic British red phone box began being phased
out, people across the country have found unusual uses for them
as they have tried to find a way to preserve the iconic kiosks.
The phone boxes are regarded as a symbol of the British way
of life, so when Colin Cook, of Yarmouth Road, Lowestoft, came
across this site in New Zealand he was somewhat surprised.
He took a photograph of the red box in Marlborough Sands, near
Picton, when visiting his son Paul, in March, and now the impressive
image has been named The Journal’s Picture of the Week.
“My wife and I thought it was a good sight to see, being
so many miles from home,” said Mr Cook.
“These telephone boxes came in handy even out there. You
can see the fishing rods in there – waiting for the right
line I reckon!”
Mr Cook will be presented with his winning photograph in a 12in
x 10in frame, mounted and inscribed, in a prize worth more than £60
from Picture Studios, of London Road North, Lowestoft.
The photo will also go forward to the next final of winning
images where, together with his fellow prize-winners, he will
have a chance to win his image in a printed 12in x 18in photo
block worth £130.
